Jax was lying in Nicolas’s bed when the prince came barreling through the door.

“What happened?” He jumped.

“I don’t know, cousin, but it was not good!” Nicolas paced, not looking at Jax and then rushed over to his window and closed the red velvet drapes.

“It couldn’t have been that bad!” Jax followed behind him. “You mean you didn’t hit it off?”

“Well, if she ever showed up, I wouldn’t know.” He faced Jax with a sturdy look to his hazel eyes. “Something threatened me before having that opportunity.”

“Something threatened you? What do you mean?”

“I-I don’t know.” He sat in a chair and bit at his lips.

“Who threatened you?”

“I don’t know!”

“What did they say?”

“Something about reaping what I sowed. Something about consequences. Consequences.”

“Consequences to what actions?”

“I don’t know that either! This doesn’t make any sense to me!”

“I wonder if Surla is okay.” Jax went to the window and peeked out between the drapes to the dark and now cloudy sky, the moon almost completely hidden.

“Is that her name? Surla?”

“Did I say Surla?”

Just then there was a tap on the door. Jax went to go answer it, hoping it would be her.

“Wait, wait, wait!” Nicolas jumped up. “Do not open it unless we know who it is.”

Jax nodded and slid open a strip of wood on the chamber’s door to see into the hall. He looked to the left and right—no one.

“Who is it?”

“Nobody.”

“No, it has to be someone. Who is it?”

Jax peeked again. “Nobody. There’s nobody.”

“Do you think it is Death calling?”

“Death calling?” Jax slid shut the opening and turned to face the young man whose face paled.

“Yes, like the tales of Death knocking on your door to come and claim you to Hell.” His voice shook. “Death comes with an army of underworld creatures, dragging you, as your boots scrape against the floor, kicking, trying to free yourself from its grasp. It’s no use, though, fighting. You never win a battle against Death.”

“Whoa, whoa… Who is filling your mind with these stories?!”

“These are tales all children know. There are even songs that go with them. You don’t know?”

“Ah, like ‘ashes ashes we all fall down.’”

“What—”

Tap, tap, tap!

“There it is again!” Nicolas exclaimed. “It was nice meeting you, cousin. Tell Mother and Father and Bastien that I love them.” He wiped his forehead with a sleeve.

Jax cocked an eyebrow. He turned in place, unlocked the door and swung it open.

In stepped a little black cat. The bell around its neck jingled as it went.

“Cat! It’s just you!” Nicolas scooped her up in his arms, and the color returned to his face. There was a remnant of a spider web stuck across one of her ears. “Where have you been? Why are you so cold? And shaking.”

Jax closed the door and locked it again.

“Hold on. I should probably go tell Father what happened. Watch my little girl as I go next door to his chamber.” He placed Noella in Jax’s arms. “I will be right back.” And with those words, he was gone in a flash.
